Embroidery - Counted Cross stitch

Materials needed

1.Fabric

2.Floss (either anchor or DMC)

3. Needle

4. Scissors

5.Frame

How to do?

Counted cross stitch transfers a design from a printed graph onto evenweave fabric. The stitcher uses embroidery floss to place X's on the fabric corresponding to symbols on the chart. Each symbol on the chart represents one X on the fabric. The different styles of symbols on the chart represent different colors of floss.

To start

Find the center of the graph. For most patterns this is shown with arrows or a bold line. Next, find the center of your fabric. An easy way to do this is to fold the fabric in half vertically and "pinch" with your finger to make a small crease. Open the fabric, fold in half horizontally and make another "pinch". Open the fabric up. The two creases will mark the center of the fabric.

To Stitch

There are two methods.
1. The first method is to work a row of half stitches (////), then work back (\\\\) to complete the X's. Use this method for most stitching.
2.The second method is to complete each X as you go. Use this method for vertical rows of stitches

To note

It is important that all the X's are crossed in the same direction.

To Finish

Make sure the fabric worked is flat. Then place in frame which suits it.

Embroidery

Embroidery is an elegant and minute art work done in fabric. It depends on a harmonious working partnership between ground fabric and threads, with the stitches being worked from a needle of the correct gauge.

Fabrics

The most suitable fabric are cotton lawn, linens and silks. printed fabrics and woven designs can also be used.

Threads

Threads normally used for free style embroidery depend on the end product. It is advisable to purchase a large quantity of thread at the same time, since any slight change in dye lots might be noticeable in the finished work. some threads suitable to use in anchor

1.Anchor stranded cotton (Art, 4625)
It is available in 294 vibrant shades loosely twisted thread with lustrous mercerized finish.

2.Anchor Multicolor stranded cotton (Art, 4615)
It is available in 7 shades. It heips to create exquisitely shaded special effects without changing colors.

3.Anchor stranded metalli skeins (Art, 4652M)
It is available in six shad es which can be easily separated in to two or more strands as per need.

4.Anchor pearl cotton No 8 (Art, 4591)
It is available in 72 shades of 10gm balls. It gives an embossed look.

Needles

Needles comes in variety of types and size. Needles are given number. Higher the number finer the needle.

Hoops(Rings)

It is good to use rings to hold fabric during stitching, Since stitch tension can be kept even and consistent. It is available in different diameter ranging from 4-12 inches and it is made of either wood or plastic. It is usually round in shape. A square (Tapestry) frame is available It has two rollers at the end for adjustment.

Types of Stitches

Tips and Tricks

1. Ensure end of thread has been cut cleanly

2. If it difficult to pass thread through hole wet the thread at one end and flatten it between two fingers. Then insert into the hole left by needle.

3. It is important to secure the thread so that embroidery stitches don't come undone. Put knots at the beginning and ending.

4. After working trim away any excess thread at the back.

Rangoli

The term rangoli is derived from words rang (colour) and aavalli (row of colours). As the name suggests it is made with beautiful and vibrant of colors. Rangoli has a religious significane enhancing the beauty of the surroundings and spreading joy and happiness all over the place . You can find many rangoli pattern in front of houses which are worthy and fascinating too. The traditional form of rangoli is made of dots interconnecting one another for decorative purpose. It is customary for Indian women to put rangoli in front of houses - so that the godess laxmi of wealth, approaches the door bringing in good fortune for her devote family.

In contemporary science, rangoli is dying slowly. Many people live in high rise modern apartments and builidings, the art of rangoli is no longer feasible. My mother helped me in making many rangoli patterns with new ideas. But now i miss that precious moments. This, is now the stuff of memories.

Any type of theme can be covered in rangoli it depends only upon our imagination.

Themes in rangoli

Rangoli's are of various types themes.
Religious Theme
It is drawn with images of gods and goddess.
Festival Theme
It is drawn at the time of diwali, onam, pongal, new year, christmas. It consists of lamps, flowers, bells, santa etc.,
Natural Theme
It contains flowers, leaves, insects and whatever we see around us.
Theme oriented
In competition as per theme given to contestant images are made.

Materials to make rangoli

Rice powder
A fine grained rice powder is a traditional medium used in ancient days and now.
Rangoli colors
Readily available in shops. Easy and fast to use.
Pulses
Food grains like dals, cereals, rice can be used by mixing with colours. It must be dried well before using. It needs previous preparations.
Chalk powder
Mix fabric paint with chalk powder in small quantity and allow to dry. It gives fine texture to rangoli.
Sand
Mix fabric paint with sand of fine size and dry it previously. It needs an outline to look effectively.
Flowers
Different kinds of flower petals are used to make rangoli.
Salt
Mix colour powders with salt and allow to dry. use the dried powder to fill. It gives an embossed and glittering look.

With the grated coconut mix colour powder and allow to dry. The preparation process takes time. But rangoli looks good and embossed.

Tips and Tricks
